In the wake of the 2008 recession, encore leaders Dave Garvey and Linda Friedman created Encore!Hartford, a program to help people 50+ with for-profit, professional skills transition to managerial careers in the Connecticut nonprofit sector.
Housed at the University of Connecticut’s Department of Public Policy, the program has helped more than 100 people move to the social sector through its combination of classroom training, networking and a two-month fellowship. In recent years, the program expanded to downstate Connecticut (Fairfield County) and tapped graduates to support newer cohorts.
In March 2020, Dave and the UConn team will launch a redesigned Encore!Connecticut, updating the program to engage more candidates, including working people planning a few years ahead. New features include:
- Weekend classes to allow people currently working full time to participate.
- Flexible fellowships for those currently working, allowing them to do a strategic consulting project rather than work at a nonprofit’s offices.
